The short version
- Write the code down exactly before you reset anything
- One reset is reasonable, a repeating code is a diagnosis job
- Most Ideal lockouts protect the appliance rather than indicate it is beyond repair
- Never open the casing or touch gas components yourself
How the code groups work
L codes are lockouts, usually ignition or overheat. F codes are faults reported by sensors. C codes relate to system conditions such as pressure. A lockout will not clear on its own, which is the practical difference between the groups.
The codes we see most often
These are the ones that come up week to week on Ideal appliances around Wigan and Leigh, with what each one usually means in practice.
- L2: ignition lockout. The boiler has tried and failed to light within its allowed attempts.
- L1: no circulation detected. Pump, air lock or blocked filter, and the boiler is protecting itself.
- F1 or C1: low system pressure. Repressurising may clear it, but repeated loss means a leak somewhere.
- F2: flame loss after ignition, often gas supply or condensate.
- L5 or F5: fan or air pressure switch fault, which is a component job.
Pressure loss on Logic models
The most frequent Ideal call we get is repeated low pressure. The boiler is doing exactly what it should, but topping it up week after week hides the real problem. Water is going somewhere, and it is usually a weeping radiator valve, a pinhole under a floor, or a discharging pressure relief valve leaving water outside where nobody notices. Chasing the leak is cheaper than repeatedly refilling a system, because fresh water carries oxygen and accelerates internal corrosion.
What you can safely check yourself
There is a small set of checks any homeowner can make before calling out an engineer, and none of them involve the boiler itself.
- Pressure gauge reading against the marked band
- Whether other gas appliances in the house are working, which tells you about supply
- Whether the condensate pipe outside is frozen in cold weather
- Thermostat batteries, timer settings and whether anyone has changed them
Where the line is
Never remove the boiler casing, adjust gas controls or work on any gas component yourself. Those are Gas Safe engineer jobs by law. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 and turn the gas off at the meter.
Common questions
What does L2 mean on an Ideal boiler?+
Ignition lockout. The appliance has tried to light and failed. One reset is reasonable, but a repeating L2 needs diagnosis of the gas, ignition and condensate side.
Why does my Ideal boiler keep losing pressure?+
Because water is escaping. Radiator valves, towel rails, a leaking auto air vent or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge are the usual causes. Find the loss rather than topping up repeatedly.
Is it worth repairing an older Logic boiler?+
Often yes, since parts are widely available. We will tell you what has failed and what is likely next so you can weigh repair against replacement.
Do Ideal boilers need an annual service for warranty?+
Yes, like every mainstream make. The service must be carried out and recorded to keep the guarantee valid.
Ideal fault code showing?
Tell us the model and the exact code and we will bring the likely parts with us rather than diagnosing blind.
