How the code groups work
F.0 to F.10 covers sensors, F.20 to F.29 covers overheat, water content and ignition, F.60 upward covers valves, pumps and internal electronics. A code that changes each time points at something systemic such as circulation or gas pressure rather than one failed part.
The codes we see most often
These are the ones that come up week to week on Vaillant appliances around Wigan and Leigh, with what each one usually means in practice.
- F.22: low water content. Usually genuine low pressure, sometimes a pressure sensor reading wrongly.
- F.28: the boiler failed to ignite on start up. Gas supply, ignition components or condensate are the usual suspects.
- F.29: it lit and then lost the flame. Frequently condensate or flue related.
- F.75: no pressure change detected when the pump starts, which points at the pump or the sensor.
- F.62 or F.63: gas valve or electronics fault. Not a reset job.
Why Vaillant condensate faults spike in winter
The condensate arrangement on many ecoTEC installs runs to an outside drain, and in a hard frost that pipe can freeze and back the condensate up into the boiler. The appliance then locks out on an ignition or flame loss code even though nothing has failed. Thawing the pipe safely and lagging it usually clears the fault for good, and it is the single most common winter call we take on this make.
What you can safely check yourself
There is a small set of checks any homeowner can make before calling out an engineer, and none of them involve the boiler itself.
- Pressure gauge reading against the marked band
- Whether other gas appliances in the house are working, which tells you about supply
- Whether the condensate pipe outside is frozen in cold weather
- Thermostat batteries, timer settings and whether anyone has changed them
Where the line is
Never remove the boiler casing, adjust gas controls or work on any gas component yourself. Those are Gas Safe engineer jobs by law. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 and turn the gas off at the meter.
Common questions
What is F.22 on a Vaillant boiler?+
Low water content. Check the pressure gauge and repressurise if it is below the marked band. If pressure is normal, the sensor or circulation is the more likely cause.
My Vaillant shows F.28 every morning but works later, why?+
That pattern is typical of a frozen or partially blocked condensate pipe thawing as the day warms up. It should be looked at rather than left.
Can I clear a Vaillant fault myself?+
You can press reset once. Anything that repeats needs an engineer with the diagnostic menu, because the stored fault history is what identifies an intermittent problem.
