Understanding the Cause of a Frozen Condensate Pipe
Modern condensing boilers are designed to be highly efficient, and part of this efficiency involves extracting heat from the exhaust gases, which produces acidic wastewater – the condensate. This condensate is drained away through a plastic pipe, typically 21.5mm in diameter, often routed externally. Problems arise when this external run is long, has insufficient fall, terminates into an open gully that ices over, or lacks proper insulation. These conditions allow standing water within the pipe to freeze, creating a blockage that prevents the boiler from operating safely.
