Diagnosing Your Potterton Hot Water Problem
When hot water is inconsistent, the prime suspect for Potterton units, particularly older ones, is often the Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) or the Diverter Valve. The PHE can become scaled or partially blocked, restricting the transfer of heat from the primary circuit to your domestic hot water. The diverter valve, which directs the hot water flow either to your radiators or to your taps, can stick or fail to fully open or close. We confirm this by checking flow rates, temperature differentials, and actuating the diverter valve to observe its operation. On occasion, issues with the NTC thermistors (temperature sensors) can also provide incorrect readings, leading to poor hot water control. On units well past ten years, a failing fan or ageing PCB can also indirectly affect hot water performance by causing overall combustion issues.
