Identifying the Source of Pressure Loss
A sealed heating system, by definition, shouldn't lose pressure. If it does, water is escaping. This can be a pinhole leak on pipework, a faulty pressure relief valve (PRV) discharging water, or an issue with the expansion vessel. On Potterton units, particularly those well past ten years, we often find the expansion vessel has failed or lost its charge. This means it can no longer absorb the pressure changes from heating and cooling, forcing the PRV to lift and discharge water, which often goes unnoticed through an external discharge pipe. It's a common issue we see in 1970s cul-de-sacs off Orrell Road with original heating systems.
