Why Your Old Cylinder Won't Cut It for Heat Pumps
Your existing cylinder, designed for a gas boiler, relies on high water temperatures (typically 70-80°C) and a relatively small coil to heat the stored water quickly. A heat pump operates much more efficiently at lower temperatures, often between 45-55°C. To heat the same volume of water with this lower temperature, you need a significantly larger heat transfer surface area. Without it, the heat pump will run for extended periods, trying to reach a temperature it’s not designed for, or simply fail to heat the water adequately, leading to frequent immersion heater use.
