Often, the biggest comfort gain for the least effort is fitting TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) to every radiator that doesn't have one. This allows you to set different temperatures in individual rooms, meaning you're not overheating an empty bedroom just to warm the living room. While convenient for adjusting your heating if you forget to turn it down when you leave or want to warm the house before you arrive, remote control primarily offers convenience rather than significant efficiency gains. The real efficiency improvements come from accurate scheduling, zoning, and load compensation, which optimize your system's operation automatically based on demand and external factors.

For a 1930s semi, often with solid walls and varied insulation, zoning can be very effective. This means controlling different areas independently. If you have a single thermostat in the hallway and no TRVs, start there. Adding TRVs and considering a multi-zone smart control system could significantly improve comfort and allow you to heat only the areas you're using, rather than the whole house.

Both help modern condensing boilers operate more efficiently by preventing them from cycling on and off excessively, genuinely improving fuel usage.
