What Happens When You Turn on the Tap?
The fundamental difference in how combi boilers and unvented cylinders deliver hot water directly impacts their running cost. A combi boiler heats water on demand. When you open a hot tap, the boiler fires up and heats the water as it flows through. An unvented cylinder, on the other hand, stores a large volume of hot water, heated by an immersion element or the central heating boiler. When you open a tap, you draw from this pre-heated store. The immediate consequence is how they react to demand.
- Combi: Heats only when called for.
- Unvented: Draws from a heated store.
- Combi: Infinite hot water, flow rate limited.
- Unvented: Finite hot water, high flow rate.
