The short version
- Registration within the manufacturer's window is mandatory
- An annual service with a dated record is nearly always required
- System filter and inhibitor are typically install conditions, not optional extras
- Unregistered or DIY interference on the appliance ends the cover immediately
The four conditions that catch people out
Different manufacturers word these differently, but the substance repeats.
- Register the appliance within the stated period after installation
- Have it serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer and keep the record
- Maintain the system cleanliness spec — filter fitted, inhibitor at correct strength
- Use approved parts and registered engineers for any repair
What 'system cleanliness' means in a claim
When a heat exchanger fails, the manufacturer's engineer will look at the system water. Sludge in the sample is the most common reason a claim gets refused. A magnetic filter, correct inhibitor dosing and an annual check of both is the whole defence.
Keeping the paperwork usable
Keep the installation certificate, the Building Regulations notification, the registration confirmation and each service record together. If you sell the house, that folder is also evidence for the buyer's survey.
Common questions
Does a missed service void the warranty?+
In most cases yes, or at least gives the manufacturer grounds to refuse. Catching up doesn't always restore it.
Can any engineer service it?+
They must be Gas Safe registered. Some manufacturers also require specific competencies for certain appliances.
Is the warranty transferable when I sell?+
Often yes, subject to the servicing record. Check the manufacturer's terms for your model.
Do you register the boiler for me?+
Yes — registration and Building Regulations notification are part of every install we do.
Keep your warranty valid
Book an annual service and get a dated written record.
