The Expansion Vessel: Often the Culprit
The expansion vessel is by far the most common cause of pressure loss. It's designed to absorb the expansion and contraction of water in your heating system. If it fails or loses its charge, the pressure gauge can swing wildly, making it look like your system is losing water, when in fact, the pressure is just reacting to temperature changes without the vessel's regulation. There isn't a safe DIY check for this beyond observing the gauge's behaviour when the system heats up and cools down. If it drops to zero when cold but quickly rises when hot, that's a strong indicator.
