What You Can See: Assessing the Immediate Situation
First, locate the condensate pipe. It's usually a plastic pipe, often white or grey, coming out of your boiler and running to an outside drain. If it's running outside and the weather is freezing, there's a high chance it's frozen. Look for ice, or a bulge in the pipe. The boiler will typically display a fault code, often related to condensate or a blockage, and make a gurgling noise as it tries to discharge the water. While inconvenient, a frozen condensate pipe in itself isn't an immediate gas safety hazard. The boiler's safety mechanisms should prevent it from operating until the blockage is cleared.
- Boiler displaying fault code.
- Gurgling noise from boiler.
- Visible ice or bulge on outside pipe.
- No heating or hot water.
