Overnight Fix: Identifying and Thawing the Blockage
Your first step is confirming it's a frozen condensate pipe. Listen for gurgling noises from the boiler or near the external pipework. The pipe will usually be plastic, often white or grey, and typically exits through an external wall. If you locate a frozen section, usually near the end where it discharges, you can attempt to thaw it yourself overnight. Apply warm water, not boiling, carefully and gradually. A hot water bottle or a microwaved wheat pack wrapped around the frozen section can also work. Avoid using a naked flame or sharp objects.
- Check for gurgling noises from the boiler.
- Locate the external plastic condensate pipe.
- Apply warm (not boiling) water gradually.
- Use a hot water bottle for sustained warmth.
- Do not use open flames or sharp tools.
